hi folks ,

I've been out and oubout quite a bit recently , and i've found two hibernacula at Brookwood :¼) (Cattle are being grazed here).

Also i've been back to my spot in Ash quite reguarly. Last year I mentioned a female isolated on an island of heather, she's still there .
This patch of heather is surrounded by mowed heather that is used for rifle practice and numerous dog walkers , and on the other side woodland used by walkers , cyclists etc . The woodland has bare soil with no places for snakes to hide .
I've checked this Heather island thoroughly and i'm 100% possative this female adder is alone . should I move her to a different area on the range that I know has numerous adders?

Here's the spot where she is

Hi Jerry ,
No , Not without having to cover a lot of ground being completely exposed out in the open . The woodland behind is just bare soil and pine cones reguarly used by dog walkers and cyclists.

Cheers,
Al

Hi Alan,
Another thought, perhaps a bit of a longshot. She looks in v.good condition, perhaps breed this year? If so may attract males (pheromones effective 500m+). If this is the case then it may be wise to move her, rather than also put other (males) at risk moving over open ground, as they will if necessary. They did this last year over the 'managed' ground at Hartland, but without mishap as far as I know.

Tony

PS This PC dummy has a problem, all you photo fundies please help!! if can in off topic strand!!

Hi Tony , Long time no Speak .

Thanks for your thoughts mate. I went out there just a while ago and moved her . Once again I checked thoroughly and saw no other adders around her .

Took her up a hill that I know with many adders and released her right next to where i reguarly see a lovely silver male. I'll keep everyone posted on her progress , as i'm sure i'll see her again .
Cheers,
Al

Excellent news about the relocated female. Will have to venture forth to Ash & Brookwood, and have a look for some adders myself. Are there any smooth snakes and sand lizards there?

Thanks
